Data archiving has long been a responsibility of the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Goettingen (GWDG). Further development of this existing expertise is the main motivation for their participation in kopal. Long-term digital archiving will be an important service of the GWDG.
As a data-processing and competence center for the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (University of Goettingen) and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (Max Planck Society), the GWDG runs a back-up and archival system that is physically separated from the deployed tape libraries. It is the operator of the high-speed GoeNET network (which runs at 1 Gbit/sec) with 1 Gbit/sec connection to the Wissenschaftsnetz X-WiN.
Within the kopal project, the GWDG is responsible for the production and testing system, for furnishing the hardware, and for the administration of the server and the storage media.
